The two-week liquid diet allows patients to lose enough weight and shrink their livers. Therefore, reducing the amount of time the surgeon spends moving around the liver.      Many individuals have extra fat in their livers or other areas of their bodies before surgery. Bariatric surgery requires the surgeon to shift the liver in order to properly access the stomach. Additionally, it is more difficult for the surgeon to safely and successfully operate around the liver the larger it gets in combination with the fat in and around it. The patient’s stay under anesthesia may be prolonged as a result, which could greatly increase the risk of complications and the associated costs of care.

The pre-operative liquid diet plan for bariatrics comes as follows:

Two Weeks Prior to Surgery:

It is necessary to switch to a liquid and soft food diet for the first two weeks prior to the procedure. The stomach’s size as well as the size of the associated digestive organs will be reduced by following this diet, which should be progressive in nature. As soon as the surgeon begins the operation, this will make things simpler for them.

Protein drinks, protein supplement mixtures, cottage cheese, tofu, low-fat dairy items, Greek yogurt, soups of various kinds, shakes, low-sugar juices, and water are a few of the foods that may be helpful during the soft food and liquid diet prior to your operation. It is recommended that you have a general diet of two liquid protein meals and a soup meal while staying clear of soups heavy in cream.

Just Prior to the Surgery

During the days just before the surgery, all patients should switch to a clear liquid-only diet. This includes broths, water, and other similar non-sugary liquids that are easily digested. The body will be using what it can from these nutrients and will be ready for surgery at this time.

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY ON THE PRE-OP DIET

Staying healthy while following the pre-op diet plan can be difficult. The daily caloric range for a liquid-only diet is 800–1,000. While it may seem difficult, it is actually very simple to accomplish. In fact, if a patient exceeds this limit, they may have symptoms like headaches, mood changes, and other issues. Caffeine should be avoided throughout this period.

Dietary Suggestions

  • One to Two Weeks Before Surgery:

    Breakfast – High Protein Drinks
    Lunch – High Protein Drinks
Dinner – Salad with some form of protein
Snacks – Metamucil or protein drink

Three Days Prior to Surgery

The time of meal is unimportant at this stage, and foods like Jell-O, broth, Slim-Fast, Atkins Low-Carb smoothies, protein powder, popsicles, water, caffeine-free tea, sugar-free juice, sports drinks, and others are appropriate. By midnight the night before the procedure, you must stop eating and drinking.

To ensure that you are well enough for the procedure, avoiding dehydration is crucial. Making ensuring your body is receiving adequate hydration is important. To ensure that your body is in the greatest possible shape before surgery, drink 48–64 ounces of water or another low-calorie, caffeine–, sugar–, and carbonated–free beverage.

There are some liquids that should be avoided such as high-sugar liquids, fruit juices, some sports drinks, alcoholic beverages, whole or 2% milk, soda, coffee, and caffeinated tea.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH THE PRE-OP LIQUID DIET

When you restrict the total calories and carbohydrates you consume in a day to an extremely low amount, some patients may experience symptoms.

Some of the symptoms you can expect to experience include:

  • Extreme Hunger Pains
    Fatigue
    Headaches
    Nausea, Constipation, Diarrhoea
    Mood Swings

The symptoms listed above are completely normal, and they should subside within 3 to 4 days, once your body gets used to consuming so few calories and carbohydrates. Drinking 64 oz of sugar-free beverages and broth can help with the severity of these symptoms.

The bariatric pre-op liquid diet can be difficult —there is no doubt about it! Therefore;

1. Plan ahead

Leading up to the days you will be participating in the liquid diet, we recommend that you go to the grocery store to stock up on all the items you will need throughout the two weeks.

2. Find a support and accountability system.

We recommend that bariatric patients find a support system; it can be friends, family, or a group of current/past patients at your bariatric clinic. By enlisting support, you are not only holding yourself accountable, but others are holding you accountable.

3. Remember, it’s temporary.

It is critical that you mentally prepare yourself for the challenge. Tell yourself, this is temporary, and it is a part of a bigger plan!

4. Ignore the numbers on the scale.

Don’t get caught up on the number on the scale. If you see that you aren’t losing weight like you want to, you may be more inclined to start cheating because “what difference does it make anyway?”.
