WHY IS A PRE-OP DIET NECESSARY BEFORE GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY?
The main goal of the gastric bypass pre-op diet is to reduce the size of your liver. Shrinking your liver makes for better surgery. In fact, your surgeon may postpone the procedure until the liver has reached the appropriate size.
The pre-op should be followed for fourteen days before your scheduled surgery. The diet is a low-sugar, reduced-calorie liquid diet.
The exception is in the two days before surgery when you will switch to a clear, liquid diet. Your bariatric surgery may permit you to consume one no-sugar protein shake each day in addition to water, broth, tea, decaffeinated coffee, Jell-O, and sugar-free popsicles.
On the night before surgery, you are only permitted clear liquids and nothing by mouth (NOP) after midnight.
WHY CHEATING ON YOUR PRE-OP DIET IS A BAD IDEA
- Your liver won’t shrink enough for surgery and will make it harder for the surgeon
- Your surgeon will know if you cheated because they will be able to see food in your stomach and/or intestinal tract (which can lead to infections)
- Your surgery might be postponed or canceled (surgeon’s choice)
- Making it harder on yourself to create new healthy eating habits that you MUST adhere to after surgery
- The increasing likelihood of complications during and after surgery
As you can see, it is not worth it to cheat on your liquid diet before surgery. Think about it

The answer to that question is most likely NO!

TIPS TO HELP AVOID CHEATING ON YOUR LIQUID DIET
- Since you won’t be able to eat all of the foods you are used to right after surgery, this is a good time to get in the habit of being a healthy grocery shopper.
- Make sure you have a plan and list before walking through the doors and remind yourself that you are only there for the essentials and nothing else!
- Stay out of the middle aisles as much as possible (this is where most of your junk food will be).
- Your happy place needs to be the perimeter of the store where you will find fresh produce and lean meats.
- If you have any junk food or trigger foods in your house, get rid of it!
- If you don’t have the food sitting in your refrigerator or pantry then the chances of you falling victim to it are ZERO.

WHY PATIENTS TEND TO CHEAT ON PRE-OP DIETS
You may cheat on the pre-op diet before gastric bypass surgery if you:
- Lack of a solid support system
- Don’t know how to eat properly
- Can’t seem to say no to your cravings
- Simply aren’t motivated enough to change
Gather a support network, educate yourself on how to live a healthy lifestyle, and identify the things that will inspire you to lose weight and keep it off permanently before you start the gastric bypass liquid diet.
The pre-op diet will last no more than four weeks. Even while a month might seem like a long period, think about it from this perspective:
